My Story
During my time in the Army, I built an impressive resume that showcased exemplary leader development, team building, and organizational development in some of the most demanding leadership positions worldwide. The Army rewarded my tireless work ethic with numerous promotions, more challenging assignments, and unique leadership experiences, each with its own set of challenges and associated risks. I successfully served at the tactical and operational levels, leading troops in three combat tours in Iraq. I also had the opportunity to serve in premier strategic and nominative assignments at the Pentagon, the White House Communications Agency, and as a Battalion Commander.
However, during one of my assignments, I experienced a near-death incident that prompted deep reflection on my life, career, and legacy. It made me question my true leadership purpose. Was I leading for self-interest and vain conceit, or was I selflessly ensuring the team reached optimal performance? Was I being the best version of a leader, or was I constrained by external and internal organizational pressures? Was I impactful and did I create environments for others to fulfill their potential, or did I stifle their creativity? Did I develop systems and processes that improved the work environment, or was I content with the status quo? Did I dictate change, or did I let change dictate me?
These reflections shaped my leadership and life philosophy: we must capitalize on our limited time to make an unlimited impact. Whether it's the decades we spend on earth, the years as an organizational leader, or the minutes spent with a client, coworker, or new acquaintance, the time invested must contribute to building our leadership legacy. I am a relationship-oriented leader who promotes purposeful leadership. This means maximizing our time to develop current leaders into better ones, empowering junior leaders to achieve greatness, and ensuring organizations reach their full potential to make an unlimited impact.
How will you take advantage of your limited time to make an unlimited impact? Lead with purpose!
